I make my living providing tree services here in Toronto, and I can tell you one thing: most people don’t look up at their trees until it’s too late. They see a long branch and think it’s ugly, or it’s dropping leaves in their gutter. I look at that same branch and see a massive liability. That’s the difference. You’re not just “cutting branches”; you’re managing safety, health, and your property.
Here in the GTA, our trees take a serious beating. Between the summer thunderstorms and the winter ice storms and heavy, wet snow, your trees are under constant stress. The first thing to understand is risk. That overhanging branch above your roof, your car, or your kid’s play area is a hazard waiting to happen. People call me after a storm, panicking, because a “small” branch just put a hole in their new roof. An emergency tree removal costs a hell of a lot more than regular maintenance. Don’t forget, if your tree damages a neighbour’s property or, worse, the hydro lines, you are the one who is responsible. Proper, professional tree trimming is risk management, plain and simple.
The second part is tree health. This isn’t just hacking away with a chainsaw. Proper tree pruning is a science. When we do a crown thinning, we’re not just chopping the top off; we’re selectively removing inner branches to improve airflow. This makes the tree less likely to be pushed over by high winds and reduces the chance of fungus and disease. We’re also looking for deadwood. Dead branches are an open invitation for pests and rot, which can spread to the healthy parts of the tree. A healthy tree is a strong tree.
This is where I see the DIY attempts go completely wrong. You can’t just cut a branch anywhere. A professional arborist knows how to cut. We make what’s called a “collar cut,” which allows the tree to heal itself properly. If you cut too far out and leave a stub, it just rots and invites insects. If you cut too close and flush against the trunk, you wound the tree, and it may never recover, leading to a massive cavity. This is the difference between a professional tree service and a guy with a saw who just wants to “get it done.”
So, don’t be a hero. That big, beautiful tree adds a lot of value to your property, but only if it’s safe and healthy. Don’t turn it into a hazard by ignoring it or trying to trim it yourself. You hire a plumber for your pipes and an electrician for your wires. For something that big and dangerous, call a certified arborist in Toronto. Get a proper hazard assessment. It’s the smartest money you’ll spend on your property this year.
